In March, the Omaha City Council unanimously voted to rename a section of 74th Street and Western Avenue near Creighton Prep in honor of Ms. Tessie O. Edwards — a beloved educator whose impact continues to shape lives long after her passing in 2012.
For many, this recognition comes as no surprise. Ms. Edwards was more than a teacher. She was a steady presence in a time of uncertainty, a quiet force of dignity and strength, and a woman whose influence reached far beyond the classroom.
A Lasting Influence
For one former student, Ms. Edwards was the single most impactful person in his young life outside of his parents. As an eighth-grade social studies teacher at St. Pius X, she introduced him to a way of thinking that would shape him for decades.
She taught that history is not a collection of disconnected events, but a continuous story — one that helps us understand the present and shape the future. That lesson sparked a lifelong curiosity and a deep commitment to learning.
Her approach extended beyond the subject matter. By asking questions instead of giving answers, and by encouraging students to seek out knowledge for themselves, she instilled a love of reading and intellectual discovery that endured long after her classroom days.
A Presence of Greatness
Yet, perhaps her greatest lesson was not found in textbooks.
Ms. Edwards never needed to demand respect — she earned it. She treated every student with dignity, setting a quiet but powerful example of how people should treat one another. Her presence alone inspired students to rise to a higher standard.
As one former student reflected, being in her classroom felt like being “in the presence of true greatness.”
That greatness was not loud or showy. It was steady, consistent and deeply rooted in faith, character and conviction.
A Broader Impact
As the first African American teacher many of her students had ever known, Ms. Edwards played a formative role in shaping their understanding of justice, equality and human dignity.
Her influence extended beyond the classroom into the hearts and minds of those she taught — shaping not only how they learned, but how they saw the world and their place within it.
Stories of her generosity further reveal her character. It was shared that she would quietly provide financial support for students in need, ensuring they could continue their education — all without ever seeking recognition.
A Mission That Continues
Today, her impact lives on through the Ms. Tessie O. Edwards Memorial Scholarship, part of the Black Student Catholic Scholarship Fund.
Established to expand access to Catholic education, the scholarship reflects Ms. Edwards’ own belief that education is not only transformative for the individual, but beneficial for the entire community.
As she once said, the goal was not simply to support one group, but to bring people together — to help students learn from one another and grow in understanding.
Honoring a Life Well Lived
The renaming of Tessie O. Edwards Avenue stands as a visible tribute to a life of quiet but profound influence.
But her true legacy is not found in a street sign. It lives in the generations of students she inspired, the values she instilled, and the opportunities she helped create — many of which continue today through scholarship support and the mission of the Catholic Future Foundation.
Her life reminds us that the most meaningful impact often comes not from grand gestures, but from daily acts of faith, integrity and love.
